Ayla Turns 1!

Ayla's first birthday is today. We had plans to celebrate her birthday on Saturday in Muscatine before Grandma passed away. Instead, on the way to Logan for the funeral, Burbacks stopped in Des Moines and we had a little birthday celebration at Chris and Brenda's. Ayla was so cute as usual! Happy Birthday, Ayla! We love you SOOO much!

My Grandma and Grandpa Stewart

Look what a beautiful couple they were. I love this picture. They are finally together again.

A couple more pics from Nana and Papa's...

Here are a couple of pics of Tate playing in Nana and Papa P's yard. He LOVES having a big area to run and play in and we wish we had that for him. Some day I guess.
I am trying to check some things off of my list the next day or two before we head out again. I just have SO MUCH to get caught up on at home. We'll see if I get everything I want done. I have a ton of laundry to do and hope to get the house all cleaned and in order so that when we get back from this weekend away for my Grandma's funeral, I don't have to worry about anything. I love checking things off of my list though. It feels good! :) I am in desperate need of some groceries too, but just hate to go buy a bunch of stuff when we're going to be gone all weekend. I'm going to try and scrounge until we get back. I think I may have to give in though and head to Aldi. We'll see.

Amidst the sadness...

There is cuteness...

Kayla

Sean took Tate and Leah on a "tractor" (aka lawnmower) ride...

This was Tate when the ride was over...notice the snot bubble...
Look at those blue eyes!!!

Daddy teaching Tate how to swing a golf club.

Tate loves these binoculars. The funny thing is that he closes his eyes when he "looks" through them.

Tate was fascinated with the drinking fountain...he thought it was amazing!

Please take a moment and consider this...

My sister and several of the people in her church have 'projects' that they put into place every couple of months that allow for people to have an outlet to give...to BE God's hands and feet and not just talk about it. It's amazing the things that have come from the projects they have created and I have decided that I need to help geet the word out. I have been touched by the response they have received and I wanted to share with all of you (who do not already read my sister's blog) how we can all help...WE can make a difference in the world. This next project could change the world...really. I have copied snipits from a couple of the blogs of people involved in this group...you can read them at Cassie's blog, Tesi's blog, Jody's Blog and Amy's Blog. They all have different ways of writing about this amazing project. They all explain how you can give and how YOU can make a difference. Every little bit counts.

So here it is...

Water For Christmas

The lack of access to clean water is the leading cause of death in underdeveloped countries.
Try to imagine walking on a three hour journey…twice a day…to collect a liquid which shares “two diabolical identities–life mixed with death. It is both cure and poison.”(Dan Haseltine)
Inside the containers of millions of people around the world is a mixture of “water, dirt, algae, cow and goat feces, bacteria, mosquito larvae and other insect eggs and parasites and various waterborne diseases waiting for a host.” (Haseltine)

They are forced every day to make the choice…drink and die.
Or don’t drink and die.
And die they do.
4500 children die EVERY day due to water related diseases.
Did you get that?
4500 children every day.
And the solution lies simply below the surface…in a relatively inexpensive and permanent solution.

But as the holidays approached, we got nervous. We feared everyone (including ourselves) would start holding their money a bit tighter as Christmas approached. We didn’t want to commit to building a well and then have to come up short.
We thought about it and prayed about it for several weeks.
I was absolutely consumed by it.
Then it hit us.
Isn’t that the point?
It’s the point of all these things. All these projects. To force us to loosen our grip on earthly consumption. To strengthen our resolve to issues of justice. To keep our eyes open. To give more. Sacrifice more. To keep the world from changing us.

Then it was these statistics that sealed the deal—
Americans spend 450 billion dollars on Christmas every year.
It would cost 10 billion dollars to give the whole world clean water.
Are you kidding me?
Unacceptable.
That was it. We were no longer digging one well. We were launching in the middle of holiday season. And we’re going for 10 billion.

* According to charitywater.org:- One in six people on the planet do not have access to safe, clean drinking water.- Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many people in the developing world, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to fetch water that is likely to make them sick. Those hours are crucial, preventing many from working or attending school. Additionally, collecting water puts them at greater risk of sexual harassment and assault. Children are especially vulnerable to the consequences of unsafe water. Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old. Honestly, I did NOT know all this a few months ago. I did know that clean, safe drinking water was not accessible to many, but I was unaware of these specific statistics. And these stats have been haunting...HAUNTING...me as I am preparing for the holiday season. 450 billion dollars will be spent in America on Christmas?!? And only 10 billion dollars needed to give the ENTIRE PLANET clean, safe drinking water?!? That is 2%! Are you kidding me? 2% of the spending done on one holiday?

We are partnering with Charity Water. You can visit their website and read more about them at http://www.charitywater.org/.We fund the wells and 100% of our donations go DIRECTLY to building wells in Liberia, Africa. And we are EXCITED about this. As our money comes in and we raise enough to start building, they will give us GPS coordinates plotted in GoogleEarth to show us exactly where the wells will be built. We can watch videos and see photos of our wells being built and check in anytime. Amazing, right?!? It cost $5,000 to build one well. But, well, our goal is 10 BILLION!

We will miss them so much!

My Grandma

Saturday before the funeral for Sean's grandpa began, I got a call that my Grandma Stewart passed away. I don't have words right now. I am trying to deal with the sadness from Sean's grandfather's death and trying to be there for Sean and now I have the loss of my grandmother to deal with as well. Sean is struggling and now I am not feeling as strong for him. Cassie wrote an amazing post about my grandma and you can read it here. I couldn't have wrote the words better...so I won't try. She has been ill and suffering for a long time...she is happy now. I know she's in heaven and I will see her again some day...see her as she was when she was well. I miss her, I have missed her for a long time.

Trick Or Treating

We decided to go trick or treating tonight with Chris, Brenda and Bode. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the kids had a blast and got TONS of candy. Tate got the hang of it towards the end. We had debated even going and heading up to Colo tonight to see about helping before Sean's grandpa's funeral, but we decided to head up tomorrow instead. I'm glad we went trick or treating because we needed something light and fun to do with all the sadness we will be feeling and surrounded with these next few days. This was it. It was a nice evening.

Bode had a blast trick or treating and towards the end decided he wanted to do it all by himself and not have Brenda go up to the doors with him. It was pretty cute.

sad

Sean's grandpa Sylvester passed away this afternoon. We got the call this evening from Sean's Dad and haven't really been able to focus since. Sal and Sean were always really close. Sean has told me so many stories and memories of times he's had with Sal. He was such a sweet man. Sean loves him so much and is really having a hard time with this even though Sal's health has slowly been deteriorating these last few years. You just can't ever prepare yourself for losing someone you love. It's been a sad night.

A Great Weekend

Our time in Muscatine truly was refreshing and much needed. Tate and I both had such a great time! It's always just so wonderful spending time with family and with my nieces and nephews. I have the pleasure of getting to see Bode pretty much whenever I want, so I really cherish the time I get to spend with Brigg, Lani, Ayla, Tyler, Leah and Kayla. I just don't get to see them as much as I would like. It was great to get to spend time with Brigg, Lani and Ayla. Since I was going to miss the festivities for Lani's birthday, I was happy to get to go and visit her and be there to give her her birthday gift. Brigg is getting so old and I cannot believe Ayla will be 1 in just 2 short weeks! Time really flies. I love seeing Tate playing with his cousins. Now we are in desperate need of some time with the Peakin side cousins!
It was so nice being at Cassie's. We had much great conversation, lots of laughs, there was always a hot pot of coffee ready, lots of yummy food and always an adorable child to watch. Thank you Cassie and Paul for housing Tate and I and for the great hospitality. Thank you Mom and Dad also for everything you do and for always helping to make our weekends in Muscatine so much fun and so memorable. We love you all!

Oh the memories...

With this piano comes so many memories. Pounding on these keys are some of my earliest memories from when we spent time at Grandpa and Grandma's house. I remember listening to Grandpa play it whenever we were there and singing Christmas carols around this piano on Christmas with my aunts and cousins. It really is so special to see Tate sitting at this piano now. He truly would have spent the entire day there...maybe he'll be a musician! He definitely loves anything involving music...playing it, singing, dancing. I love that he enjoys music so much.

Time Out

Tate spent some time there while in Muscatine.

We're home

We got home around 10 pm last night and pretty much went right to bed. I am still exhausted! I have lots of pictures, but they will have to wait. It's cold outside today and I just want to stay home and cuddle up on the couch (or stay in bed :)) with a blanket and my boys. Tate did not want to get up this morning either! The weekend was great though, a ton of fun! I'll post pictures later. I need to go try and make it through my work day. Ugh.

Today is Lani's 5th birthday! I can't even believe it! She is the sweetest thing ever and I cannot believe it's been 5 years since the first time I saw her beautiful face! Happy Birthday Lulu!!!!! We love you so much!

In Need of a Refresher

I can't believe that it's Wednesday night! Two more days of work this week and off to Muscatine for a fun weekend! I can't wait to get through these last 2 days of my week. I only wish Sean could come with us! :( My mind is mush...I don't really have anything exciting to write about, just feel like I am going through the motions to do my job during the day, get home in time to make dinner, feed Tate and then get him cleaned up and ready for bed with maybe if I am lucky 45 minutes to spend with Tate before he goes to bed. It's wearing on me. I have moments of "I don't think I can do this anymore." I know that I have to though. I desperately need something to refresh me, I am hoping this weekend will do it...I am PRAYING this weekend will do it.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Wish it was still the weekend...

I miss this weekend. It was a good one! Here are some pictures from Sunday when Tate and I met my friend Jamie and her son Jaxson. Jax is such a little sweetie...he just melted into me when I held him and he didn't make a peep the whole time we were at the park! I love little babies and seeing them makes Tate seem so old!

A Good Weekend

As I stated in my previous post, we had a good day yesterday. Today was a good day too. Tate and I went to Raccoon River Park and met up with a friend and her little boy Jax...he's such a sweetie, almost 4 months old. We had a picnic and then enjoyed the beautiful weather while Tate played on the playground. Tate had a blast! Then, we got home and played and played and played with all of Tate's Handy Manny toys and read books and danced...just had a nice afternoon. Then Tate went down for a looooooong nap. I got some time to relax and get some clothes organizing done. I put away some summer clothes of mine, reorganized my closet and dresser. It feels good to do that. Once Tate finally woke up, we headed to Cathy and Steves because my Grandpa and uncle were there. We ate some super yummy food (thanks Cathy!) and hung out and Tate ran around with Bode and had a great time. Tate was a little stand offish with his Great Grandpa at first, but by the time we left, he was leaning in for kisses. He kept wanting kisses and kissed him about 4 times! It was so sweet!

We had a great weekend and it makes it all the harder to head back to work tomorrow. :( I am hoping that the week flies by. Sean has a busy weekend ahead of him this next weekend and Tate and I are going to Muscatine on Friday when I get off of work and will head back home on Sunday. Lani's birthday is the 27th, so we wanted to see her and hand deliver her birthday gift. Also, I think I will be setting up shop to do Cassie's hair while I am there as well. It'll be nice to get away for a weekend. It feels like it's been a while. I just wish Sean could come too. Looking forward to the days when Sean will be more available. It's not far away and I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel...only about 6 months! Woohoo!
